I agree that there is a mentality that it’s all up to you and if you fail it’s because there’s some flaw in you. This perspective is good in one way because it allows you to take full responsibility for your success, though you’re right in saying there are other elements at play.

I think of it like a casino. It’s a mix of luck (or random chance) and skill, but I do think there is a danger in emphasising luck more than personal responsibility because then it’s easy to slip into a victim cycle or resentful that luck didn’t sway your way when there are clearly things that you could improve upon.
